Halloween Eve Wedding Tea

 Open the Gate........., Walk in for............

A tale of  love and matrimony lost,
among the hallows of the wooded ground,
unrequited sorrow
for two lost and wandering souls,

The Wedding Cake is ready

1 1/2 c. flour, 1/2 c. cocoa, 2 tsp bake powder, 1 tsp soda, 1/2 tsp salt,
1/2 c. buttermilk, 1 c. canned pumpkin, 2 tsp vanilla extract, 3/4 c. butter, 
1 c. dark brown sugar, 1 c. sugar, 3 large eggs, 1 egg yolk, 

Sift the flour, cocoa, baking powder, baking soda, and salt together. Stir the buttermilk, pumpkin, and vanilla extract together in a small bowl. Beat the butter and sugars together using an electric mixer on medium speed until light and fluffy. Beat in the eggs and yolk, one at a time. Reduce mixer speed to low and alternately beat in the flour and buttermilk mixtures in thirds.
  • Pour the batter into the prepared pans. Bake until a tester, inserted in the center, comes out clean--about 35 minutes. Cool layers completely before icing.
  • Step 1: Frost Beat 6 ounces softened cream cheese using a mixer set on medium-high speed until fluffy. Add 1 1/2 cups confectioners' sugar, 2 1/4 teaspoons cocoa, 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon, and 3/4 teaspoon vanilla and beat on low speed until well combined. In a separate bowl, beat 1 1/2 cups heavy cream with 3/4 cup confectioners' sugar and a scant 1/4 teaspoon orange food coloring on medium-high to soft peaks. Gently fold the whipped cream into the cream cheese mixture until well combined. Spread 1 cup frosting between the two layers and use the remaining frosting to ice the top and sides of the cake. Chill 30 minutes and proceed to step 2. Makes 3 cups.
  • Step 2: Glaze Place 4 ounces of chopped bittersweet chocolate, 1 tablespoon cold unsalted butter, and 3 tablespoons corn syrup in a medium heatproof bowl. Bring 1/2 cup heavy cream to a boil, pour it over the chocolate, and let sit for 3 minutes. Gently stir, using a whisk, until smooth. Let sit for 3 to 5 minutes, until the glaze thickens slightly. Pour the glaze onto the center of the frosted cake and smooth out to the edges to allow the glaze to drop over the sides. Makes 1 cup.

Our tale begins as any other Halloween Wedding day,
with pictures taken among the wooded way 
on this beautiful goolish gray autumn day.....

The Handmaiden is in attendance to assist her Bride,
Among the shadows of silent graves, 
Barren trees and eerrie mist 
The bride  
Ambiguous, foreboding, feeling at her side

Fears are tempered with..... 
comforting words and a soothing tea.....
to calm this melancholy..... 

Won't you have some too? 

To a boiling pot of water add:
Orange mint leaves,
Fennel leaf ,
Chamomile Blossoms
let steep 10 minutes
Strain into tea cups, 

Now at last.................
Time for our Bride to walk.......
Down the lane in the wood, 
To join her beloved at the Alter Stone, 

The Bride arrived to the Alter Stone,
Standing all alone, 
Waiting for her Groom to meet her here,
With Gruesome, Bone Chilling Cheer!

As I fear He is not here!!

Could He be lost in the wood on our 
Hallowed Wedding Day?

                                                             Weary searching, 

Where can my beloved be?

Behind....., around......, through, 
the stones and tombs, 

Wherefore are you my intented?  
Is this a dream? 
A turn of fate that he is late?
Does he await me elsewhere? 

What is this?  
I see His name engraved upon the tomb!!!
Can it be?

Another vision upon the grey and misty ground...... ......
with fallen crushed and blistered leaves for a bed.......

Who is this poor Bride reposed here?..........
What malady has encoffined her, 
While wearing her gossamer gown?
Here face is a ghastly pallor, 
She is still and stiff in the chilling Autumn Air..........

Approaching  closer.............
                                      closer .......
To find,.........

It is I !!............
                     Alas it is  I ........

Oh Gods and Goddess from above! 
What is this lurid tarn? 

Am I here? Is this image but a mirage, a Ghost?
Shall I be wandering and meandering 
Among the hollows tomb, 
 Forever searching for my beloved Groom?

Or have I joined Him in the 
grave where our marriage will be?

Forever after the town folk say,

You can see among the tombs,
these unredeamed pervaded spirits, 
The veil of spacial dementions will open for you to observe, 
A precipitous brink of a black and dreary evening ,
The Bride and Groom walking hand in hand,
 Among the cemetery wood.... ,
From forth their Marriage Tomb.......

As the engraved words express......

"Forever Together my love and I will be,
 Within the the mystic vapor mist of our,
 Ghostly Existence "

Feast of Samhain

So given the info from last week, most of the world agree's 
Halloween was a religious time of year for Christians. 
Or was it really? Did you ever consider,
 that Halloween is also the time of year to celebrate the environment , 
the heavens, the changing seasons more specifically,
 the midway point between the autumnal equinox and the winter solstice?

The  Celtic/Pagan cultures thought of Samhain, or fall, or October as a time of celebration of a time of bounty. Samhain is an Irish word, meaning "summers end".  Samhain represents the third and final harvest of the year or "sabbat". Celtic tribes also thought of Samhain as the time of the New Year because each festival began on the "eve" of the celebrated day, so too does the new year begin on the eve of, "all hallows eve" or October 31, with the advent of winter.

People walked around at night offering prayers for the dead and then receiving cakes, "soul cakes" in exchange. So lets take our inquest a little further, Generally, a soul cake was made with whatever grain the community had available.
The cakes were more like a large cookie, called souls. They  were etched with crosses that clearly identified them as Alms for the dead and there was an expectation that a prayer would be said each time a cookie was eaten.

Here is my receipe for "souls cake":
3 cups flour
1 teaspoon soda
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1 cup sugar
2 eggs
1/2 cup butter
3/4 cup of Buttermilk
Combine flour, soda, powder together. Mix sugar, eggs, butter together in a separate bowl until smooth, gently add some dry to the butter mixture, fold in, then start adding your buttermilk and mix, repeat process till all are combined. Knead slightly divide and form into rounds on a cookie sheet, sprinkle sugar on top. Make a cross on top with a butter knife. Bake at 350 for about 20  minutes depending on your oven.

Certainly the festival of Samhain, was one of the  most important of the four quarter days in the medieval Irish calendar, and this was known as the time of year when the physical and supernatural worlds were closest and magical things could happen. Samhain a time when the dead walked the earthly plain receiving their  prayers offered, and the  Faerie Folk racing out from their hallow hills, "sidhe" or faerie mounds to wreak havoc about the town.
What a fun time for all of us now to take the many elements from the old and mix with the new for a fun day and night that is modern Halloween !
Oh, and there is sooooo much more to it!!!
